If you’ve recently moved into a doer-upper, or you’re renovating your existing property, you’ll have a lot to do. Once you have got all the big jobs out of the way it can be tempting to stop there and just relax. However, if you spent a bit more time on a few finishing touches you make a huge difference to the quality of your living space. Here are 5 simple things you can do to make your home feel extra special.

Replace old radiators

The style of radiator you go for is up to you, of course; you could go retro or ultra-modern, or anything in between. The point of this is to get rid of those tired old chunks of metal hanging on the wall and bring a bit of interest or even luxury to your space. One option is a very narrow radiator with a small footprint, which can work really well in a small room or hallway. In a bathroom, if it can accommodate lots of towels and warm-up bathrobes, then it’ll definitely be earning its keep. If you can’t afford a new radiator then you can repaint the ones you have. Match the radiator colour to the wall to help ugly radiators blend into the background.

Install new skirting boards

Lots of people concentrate on new paint or wallpaper when they’re redecorating. The average skirting board is lucky to get a lick of paint, most times, let alone any repairs or even replacements. Your skirting board, however, is one of the features that can really frame a room. Old fashioned skirting boards will always reduce the impact of your design scheme if you are aiming for a modern look. High and ornate skirting boards quickly add elegance to a room. Skirting boards are easy to replace and relatively cheap to buy so you should definitely consider doing it. You can find lots of inspiration and new ideas for skirting boards from skirtings r us, whether you’re looking for modern or traditional trimmings.

Update your curtain rail

Another feature that both frames a room (or, in this case, a window) is the curtain rail. Replacing your curtain rail is one of the cheaper ways to breathe new life into a space and to bring a theme together, so take some time to browse shops – online and in store – to find the ideal style and colour. Switch up your light…switches

After decades of dull white plastic light switches and plates, we now have a seemingly infinite choice. Just changing this small feature can bring a bit of interest and solidify a theme or colour palette. You can extend these changes to plug sockets and you could also install some USB sockets in strategic areas around the room so you’re no longer scrabbling for charging spaces. Imagine that, what a luxury!

Tidy up window frames

Old window frames look dirty and spoil the look of your redecoration. If you can’t afford to replace them spend some time improving the look of what you have. First, get a washing-up brush and degreaser and give the frames and windowsill a really good clean to remove dirt, mould and loose paint. Once dry fill any cracks around the window with sealant or poly filler. Fill any damage in the window frames too using a suitable material. If your frames are wood you can buy putty in lots of different colours which you can mix to get a perfect colour match. If the wood is old and dry you can apply a few coats of linseed oil with a brush to get some moisture back into the wood. Then treat it with an exterior wood preservative. You can get these in a range of colours so you can choose one that matches what you have or that is a bit darker.
